Some people say there is no basis for all this doomsday talk. The Mayans themselves do not believe in the end of the world scenario and there are no warnings of disaster in their ancient texts or inscriptions. But why is talk about 2012 so prevalent? There must be something behind it all. Why did the Mayans end their calendar on that date which happens to coincide with the winter solstice? Author John Major Jenkins posited that a galactic alignment will take place on that date and that the Mayans constructed the calendar around astrological events. While the Mayans didn’t believe disaster would take place on this year, they thought that a spiritual change would occur instead. An age of enlightenment like the Renaissance will emerge and our world will change for the better.
